Interactive. Innovative. Fun.
With “Webcam Greetings,” Hallmark Cards updated the timeless greeting card for the digital age.
This was one of the first major implementations of Augmented Reality technology in consumer products, long before Instagram face filters or Microsoft’s HoloLens. Augmented Reality takes real-world information — in our case, a webcam video feed from the user’s computer — and augments it with an interactive digital experience that reacts to the user’s input. After downloading a small application, the user simply holds up their card to the camera. The visuals on screen respond to the card’s location, rotation, and angle to produce some amazing results.
A simple greeting card can be instantly transformed into a stage for a play; the reins for riding a dragon; a skateboard in a half-pipe; or to unlock augmented facial tracking — far before Instagram took that experience mainstream.
